PLAYER STORY
“Football Gives You A Career. Purpose Gives You Direction”
Toby Bull
Former Brighton & Hove Albion Goalkeeper, Entrepreneur and Content Creator
Former Brighton goalkeeper Toby Bull experienced the highs of academy and first-team football before seeing injury and circumstance alter the course of his playing career. Rather than viewing education and business as a fallback, Toby used them to create purpose during difficult periods and ultimately built a successful social media and content creation business. Today he advocates for footballers to develop interests and ambitions beyond the game.
For Toby Bull, education was never simply a backup plan.
While pursuing a professional career with Brighton, football understandably dominated his thinking. Travelling with first-team squads and operating within an elite environment, it was easy to imagine a long future in the game.
When injuries disrupted that pathway, Toby found something many players struggle to discover: purpose beyond football.
Studying for a Master’s degree gave him structure, focus and a sense of achievement during a difficult period. At the same time, he began filming his goalkeeper training sessions for social media. What started as a way to stay motivated and continue training eventually evolved into a successful business and career.
Toby believes every player should explore interests away from football, not because they need a backup plan, but because developing purpose, skills and confidence outside the game makes them stronger both as athletes and as people.
His story challenges the idea that footballers should only focus on football and demonstrates how passion, education and curiosity can open entirely new opportunities.
