“Nothing replaces playing football”
Andy Liddell
Fitness Coach, Preston North End | Former Professional Footballer
Andy Liddell enjoyed a successful professional playing career spanning more than 20 years, representing clubs including Barnsley, Wigan Athletic, Sheffield United and Oldham Athletic. Following retirement, he transitioned into coaching and now works as Fitness Coach at Preston North End. Drawing on both his playing and coaching experiences, Andy is a passionate advocate for helping footballers prepare for life after the game.
Andy Liddell knows first-hand that no matter how close you remain to football after retirement, nothing truly replaces playing the game.
Reflecting on his own career, he admits that if he had the opportunity again, he would spend far more time preparing for life beyond football. Whether through coaching qualifications, education or vocational training, he believes players should actively plan for their future while they are still playing.
Andy also challenges the common misconception that all footballers leave the game wealthy. While public attention focuses on Premier League salaries, he highlights the reality facing many players in the lower leagues and previous generations who often retire without significant financial security.
As someone who regularly supports former players through his connections with The Players Foundation, Andy has seen first-hand how practical support can transform lives. From financial assistance to helping families through difficult periods, he believes organisations like The Players Foundation are not simply valuable, they’re essential.
