PLAYER STORY
“I want to be more than just a footballer”
Tom Rennardson
Former Grimsby Town scholar on resilience, education and creating opportunities beyond the game.
Tom Rennardson spent two years in the academy system at Grimsby Town, enjoying memorable Youth Cup runs and opportunities to train alongside senior professionals. Despite performing well and being involved with the first team shortly before his release, he was not offered a professional contract. Rather than viewing this as the end of the road, Tom embraced education, began a Law degree and continues to pursue football alongside a growing range of opportunities beyond the game.
One day Tom Rennardson was training with Grimsby Town’s first team. Twenty-four hours later, he was no longer a footballer at the club.
It was a difficult moment, but one that reinforced an important lesson: football can change in an instant.
Having always believed he wanted to be more than just a footballer, Tom quickly shifted his focus towards education and personal development. He enrolled on a Law degree, continued playing football at a high level and sought opportunities that would broaden his horizons beyond the traditional football pathway.
Through programmes such as Premier League Futures and an educational football trip to the United States, Tom has explored new opportunities, built valuable connections and gained confidence in his ability to succeed both inside and outside the game.
As a beneficiary of The Players Foundation, Tom’s story is one of perspective, resilience and preparation, demonstrating that setbacks can often become the starting point for new opportunities.
