PLAYER STORY
“The more well-rounded you are the better”
Jon-Paul Pittman
Development Coach, Brentford FC | Former Professional Footballer
Jon-Paul Pittman enjoyed a long professional playing career before moving into coaching and player development. Now working with young players at Brentford FC, he combines practical football experience with academic study, helping the next generation understand that personal growth, education and football development can work hand in hand.
For many footballers, the game can become their entire identity.
Jon-Paul Pittman believes that mindset can create challenges both during and after a playing career. Drawing on his own experiences as a player, coach and academic, he discusses the importance of broadening horizons beyond football and helping players understand that education and sporting ambition are not competing priorities.
He explores the concept of “identity foreclosure”, where players become so focused on being footballers that other aspects of their personality, interests and potential are neglected. He argues that the most successful individuals are often the most well-rounded and that education, curiosity and personal development can enhance football performance rather than distract from it.
Jon-Paul also highlights the transferable skills developed through sport and encourages clubs to create more opportunities for players to explore future career pathways. His message is one of empowerment: footballers are capable of much more than they often realise.
