PLAYER STORY
“More than a footballer”
Ellen White, MBE
England’s record goal scorer, Ellen White, on transferable skills, education and finding a new direction beyond the game.
Ellen enjoyed an exceptional playing career at club and international level, becoming England’s record goal scorer and one of the most recognisable figures in the women’s game.
Before becoming a full-time professional, Ellen experienced the demands faced by many women players, combining employment, early-morning gym sessions and evening training. Since retiring, she has moved into broadcasting and the media – acknowledging that skills developed through football can support a new career.
Although women’s football has made huge strides in recent years, Ellen believes it’s important not to overlook the realities faced by players outside the very top of the game.
She says one of the biggest challenges is recognising the transferable skills developed through football. Qualities such as resilience, teamwork, communication and discipline can open doors across many industries, but players need guidance to discover where their experience may take them.
Ellen also highlights the continuing financial uncertainty within the women’s game, particularly below the top divisions, and argues that support should be available throughout the football pyramid. Initiatives such as the student living grants offered by The Players Foundation can help with preparation for a career beyond football.
Ultimately, Ellen’s story reinforces a central message: football is only one chapter of a player’s life, and with the right support, the skills developed on the pitch can become the foundation for success far beyond the game.
